Joaquim Almeida is a one man show on his 9 hectare estate in the western Douro Valley, just a few kilometers from the Spanish border. The steep slopes and varied soil of the Douro Valley, coupled with its utter lack of rainfall, make it a perfect locale for producing robust reds. This cuvée comes from Joaquim's younger vine plantings of touriga nacional, touriga franca, tinta cao, and tinta roriz. Unlike the vast majority of wines produced in this area, this red sees no oak, though there's no shortage of tannins provided by the grapes' thick skins. The result is a lush, powerful red with plenty of inherent structure but no oak flavor. Try this wine with your next skirt steak with a bright green chimichurri sauce.
