2019 Clos Saron "Home Vineyard"

Gideon & Saron’s “Home Vineyard” is 2.5 acres of own-rooted pinot noir facing north-east at 1530-1600 feet altitude.

The top soil is alluvial clay-loam on volcanic ash, fractured granite and quartz sublayers. An unusual geological anomaly, this site is gently sloped with few rocks to be found, not like the rest of the Sierra Foothills, which tend to be steep and extremely rocky. iIt is also unusually cool in the context of the region, producing the required climatic conditions for pinot production. The vineyard was planted (own-rooted, 3 x 6’ spacing) in 1979/80 and 1999, using as many clones - known and unknown - as they could lay our hands on, plus a handful of pinot gris and chardonnay vines just for fun. Irrigation is used sparingly (as needed) in newer blocks, while the older block is dry farmed. 960 bottles produced.
