Jean Delobre is a syrah specialist who calls the hilltop town of Bogy in Saint Joseph his home. Originally his organic family farm, which grows everything from apricots to pears to wildflowers, sold off their wine grapes to the local cooperative; but starting in 2001, he began bottling his own estate wines. Hand-harvested, fermented with natural yeasts, and usually made without any sulfur in either vinification or bottling, Jean’s wines are decidedly natural, while also showing a generous amount of fruit and energy. Don’t fear the funk! There’s still plenty of characteristic black olive and pepper to go around. This particular cuvee of 100% syrah sees no oak and 1/3rd of the grapes undergo whole cluster carbonic fermentation for extra freshness. A fine wine to pair with lamb or pork or anything you’d toss on a grill for sure, but fear not vegetarians, this would certainly do quite well with a herbaceous hearty stew or hard cheeses.
