Gianlorenzo Picollo follows in the footsteps of his father Ernesto and grandfather Lorenzo, who founded his family's winery at the end of WWII in the humble commune of Rovareto, which has become known as one of the more prestigious areas for producing Gavi. The southeastern tip of Piedmont is more Mediterranean than Alpine, giving the local cortese vines more than enough sun and salt air to form Gavi's lush, refreshing, saline wines. Gianlorenzo favors tradition of technology in the vineyards, eschewing chemical herbicides and pesticides altogether. Gavi is traditionally aged on the lees until bottling, reducing the need for sulfur, and allowing the wine to slowly clarify naturally. The "Rovareto" bottling from Picollo is made from vines averaging 65 years of age, and offers ample texture, subtle stone fruit and herbal notes, and a brisk, dry finish. Serve it as an aperitif or with any manner of seafood.
