Description

Gutadel is a specialty of Markgräferland, a sub-region of the southern Baden, in the far southwestern corner of Germany, bordered by the Rhine River and France to the west and Switzerland to the south. The variety is more famously grown in its likely motherland of Switzerland, where it's called chasselas or fendant and represents the bulk of the white wines produced along those alpine slopes. Good examples of chasselas can also be found on the French side of the border, especially in Alsace, where a few stubborn producers till offer excellent monovarietal bottlings. Though its bouquet is muted, its silky, almost oily texture makes it one worth seeking to pair with bluefish, mountain cheeses, and other bold flavors.
