Georg Prieler is the current head of the family-run Prieler estate winery, located in Schutzen, Austria. He oversees 20 hectares of vineyards in northern Burgenland which is the sunniest region in all of central Europe with about 2000 hours of sunshine annually and below average rainfall. These conditions, along with the various soil compositions of the vineyards help produce some outstanding grapes (pinot blanc in particular). Their Gemischter Satz comes from a vineyard they purchased in 2019 located on a plateau that Georg says is “extreme limestone”. And just to clear things up; “gemischter satz” is how Austrians refer to a field blend of multiple grapes grown in the same vineyard (at least 3), harvested simultaneously and co-fermented. This blend includes weissburgunder (aka pinot blanc), gruner veltliner, sauvignon blanc, gelber muskateller and welschriesling, all of which were fermented in temperature-controlled stainless-steel and then aged in a combination of stainless steel, wooden cask and amphora. The result is a very aromatic, lively, super crispy wine. Lots to love here; citrus, herbs, white flowers and those precious, precious minerals. Seafood and salads are natural pairings but this would also be nice with a Thai curry.
