2024 Colterenzio Pfefferer Moscato Giallo

Cantina Colterenzio was founded in 1960 by 26 winegrowers as a cooperative in the province of South Tyrol in northeastern Italy. South Tyrol is more commonly referred to as Alto Adige or by its German name Südtirol. The winery itself also has a German name: Kellerei Schreckbichl. Located near the German border, there’s plenty of cultural crossover in the region, particularly with food and drink. These days, Colterenzio partners with 300 winegrowers covering just as many hectares in the foothills of the Dolomite mountains. Pfefferer is one of their most popular wines but don’t be fooled by the “Moscato” on the label; this isn’t Italian dessert wine. This Moscato is Moscato Giallo which is also known as Yellow Muscat (or Goldmuskateller in Germany). Pfeffer is the German word for pepper and the local strain of Moscato Giallo is called Pfefferer on account of its spicy aromatics. It’s the ideal aperitif wine for the waning days of summer but will also pair nice with spicy Thai or a shrimp stir fry at the dinner table.
